LET vs EMLA

LET is used for open wounds. EMLA is used for closed wounds.

LET

Lidocaine, Epinephrine, Tetracaine

  1. Insert into wound
  2. Cover with sterile cotton/gauze
  3. Apply pressure for 30 minutes
  • Avoid finger, toes, penis, nose or ear cartilage
  • Contraindication: Allergy to amides anesthetics
  • Not for grossly contaiminated wounds

EMLA

Lidocaine 2.5% and Prilocaine 2.5%

  1. Apply to intact skin under occlusive dressing for 1hr
  • <5kg = Max total 1G
  • >5kg = Max total 2g
  • >10kg = Max total 10g
  • >20kg = Max total 20g
